At first it took 2 days to even get connected to a network in the EU. Had to manually select a network which was apparently unavailable! Bought a 250nb pack using text "BUY 250MB" to the right number. Confirmation received but unable to use it as phone says the service is not available!

I'd like to help you use data roaming abroad
It sounds as though you may not have data roaming switched on. You can do this by going into the settings of your phone and turning it on manually.
I've included a link here to our mobile guide help page. Simply click the make and model of phone you have and you should find some instructions around turning data roaming on.
As you mentioned you had initial issues connecting to the EU carrier it sounds as though your data roaming issue maybe related to this previous problem. Sometimes although everything maybe set up correctly on the phone roaming may still experience issues.
