Premium text received

Hi I was away on holiday abroad (did not use sim card) and came back to find that on my latest mobile bill, I have been charged £4.50 for receiving a premium text!

Is there any way to get a refund from Virgin?

Thanks

Re: Premium text received

Hi whit3rabb1t,

who was the text from? Did you subscribe to something (accidentally or intentionally).

You will need to speak to customer services:

789 from a Virgin mobile or 0345 6000 789 from any other phone.

Re: Premium text received

Hi AlexKid,

Thanks for your prompt reply.

It was from the number 700046049 which appears to be some sort of scam when I searched online.

Nope definitely have not subscribe to anything recently.

Thanks for your help.

Hi whit3rabb1t,

entering the number into EE's Third Party Services info' provides this:

  • Short code number:65466
  • Service description:Competition Subscription (text STOP to 65466 to cancel)
  • Contact details:03303326290 or support@magicplanetinvestltd.com

This service is provided by Magic Planet and managed by Zamano Solutions Ltd.

Re: Premium text received

So I need to email them to stop them sending the texts?

...presumably at additional expense?

If whit3rabb1t didn't subscribe, what comeback is there in terms of recovering the money? I can't just go into the pub, say something to a random stranger and charge them nearly a fiver for what I had to say, so how come these companies can pick a number at random and do it?

Re: Premium text received

The assumption is that you did subscribe, but until the regulator put onus of proof onto the premium rate supplier rather than the poor customer, then this sort of thing will continue.

Fair point,

it might be safer from a cost point of view to email the company and ask to be removed from their list.

Since whit3rabb1t did not knowingly subscribe to any third party text service. He may well have done so accidentally.

I.e. entering a competition, filling in an on line form and not un-checking a permission box.
