Pay Monthly allowance phoning/texting while in Spain

I am going to Minorca (Spain) tomorrow.

I have a Pay Monthly plan which gives me free texts and 120mins airtime in this country.

Will I still get this allowance while I am in Minorca for calls and text back to the UK?
Will this still apply If I text my wife (with me in Minorca, she is on PAYG with O2)?

My wife normally pays 10p per text with O2 while texting back to UK. If she sends me a text while we are both in Minorca will it cost double? i.e. will she have to pay for the text to go to UK and then pay again for it to come back to Minorca?

Hi ayjayh,

before you leave the UK, call customer services (free on 789) and check that "Roaming" is active on your account and that "International call barring" is off.

Your allowances are for use in the UK only. Once abroad in Europe you'll be charged the EU roaming rates:

Making a Call 4p (per minute)
Receiving a Call 0p (per minute)
Sending an SMS 1p
Sending an MMS 40p
Data: purchase an EU Data Pass

A 30 second minimum call charge applies to all calls.

You can look here to see O2's roaming rates: http://international.o2.co.uk/internationaltariffs/travelling_abroad

Hi ayjayh,

if your wife texts you (another UK mobile) whilst she is abroad, she will be charged her network provider's roaming rate.

It makes no difference charge wise whether the UK mobile she is texting is at home or abroad (so no "double" charge Smiley Happy)

Thanks, can you explain difference SMS/MMS and how do I tell which one I am using?

Sorry if this is obvious, but if I ever knew the answer I've forgotten it.

SMS is a normal text message with no emojis.

MMS are known as picture messages but also a text message with emojis or a very large text can be automatically changed to a MMS by the phone incurring the 40p charge, this by the way is the same in the uk

Re: Pay Monthly allowance phoning/texting while in Spain

Thanks JOhn and AlexKid,

When I type a text I usually add a smiley (is that an emoji?) and because I get free texts normally I have never had to pay anything.

When texting while abroad can I assume that if I don't include a smiley it will go at the 1p rate?

Also, in my original question, if my wife texts me while we are in Minorca will she pay a double rate (Spain>UK>Spain)

Thanks

Re: Pay Monthly allowance phoning/texting while in Spain

A smiley of the basic type is ok, the more modern emojis are the issue, but as I never use them I've no experience, so yes as you normally use exits it's at the 1p rate
