No calls or text

I have just changed my account to sim only as I have bought a new iphone. Although Im awaiting a new sim card that will enable 4g access, I was told my current sim card will work. I have set up the new iphone and can get 3g internet access but cant call or text. Do I need to wait for the new sim or is there another error?
