Bought a new mobile before going on holiday to canada, and changed to a monthly contract, and all it shows is mobile network not available. My wife has a pay as you go with virgin and she has no problem. Any idea? Any suggestions would be welcome.
"Roaming" is on by default in the account settings of Virgin PAYG mobiles.
This is not so for Virgin "Pay Monthly" mobiles. To further complicate things, I'm afraid that in order to activate roaming on a pay monthly SIM it is necessary to have had it for three months (made three payments). - You say you've just changed?
It may be possible to have roaming activated ahead of this time by calling and speaking to customer services but be advised that a £50 deposit may be required.
