Mobile Data won't activate

Looking for some help, I've just upgraded to a new phone (Sony xperia e5) but the mobile data won't switch on. I've used the over air thing and got the text to set my APN settings and they match what I found online. I've checked network operator is showing as Virgin 3G and under Data usage, I've ensured it is set to on, with the limit off for just now. A friend mentioned it might be something to do with the SIM card, I got a new SIM Nano as the old one was a Micro, but I've had my text through to activate it etc. Anything else to try?

Does the phone show either a 3G, H or H+ network connection?

Nope it shows a signal of bars, but no indicators for h+ 3g etc. I can connect through wifi fine, it's just mobile data.

Ok go to settings, mobile data, network mode, choose 2G/3G/4G auto then reboot.

If that fails then you may need to renter the apn's
Use the manual to follow the process
Here is the data needed

Name — Virgin Media Mobile Internet
APN — goto.virginmobile.uk
Proxy — Not Set
Port — Not Set
Username — user
Password — Not Set
Server — Not Set

MMSC — http://mms.virginmobile.co.uk:8002
MMS proxy — 193.030.166.002
MMS port — 8080
MCC — 234
MNC — 30
Authentication type — PAP
APN type — internet + mms
Press the Menu key.
Touch Save.

This phone doesn't have those exact options, but it has a 4G (preferred)/WCDMA/GSM, Network operator is 3GVirgin, It doesn't pick up the 4G one it keeps defaulting back to the 3G. I tried entering the APN manually yesterday without any success. I'll be in town tomorrow, so I'll take it ti the store.

Don't choose the 4G option as you will have a 3G sim and it won't connect to 4G

The new contract and therefor the new SIM is 4G. However, something that might help others, my monthly contract period shifted over on Saturday and lo and behold, my mobile data started working straight away without any other fiddling with settings, so it would appear that it just wasn't working until the billing date turned to the new period.
