Invalid Sim

My pay as you go phone is now telling me that the sim is invalid.  I do not use the phone that often, but I want to know why it has become invalid.

For PAYG SIMs, if you don't use them within a certain period of time for a chargeable event, they they'll be disconnected. How long that time is depends on your plan.

For instance this is the term for the 'Big' tariffs:

3.7 Keep talking!: You need to use our Services at least once within any 180 day period either by making a chargeable call or sending a text message. If you don’t we may suspend your access to the Services and disconnect you from the Network. We don’t really want to lose you as a customer so please ensure you keep talking or texting!

Some of the older PAYG plans have this time at 90 days.

Re: Invalid Sim

Your existing SIM? You can't

You'll need to get a new SIM - which will come with a new mobile number.
