Going over 5gb data every month???

Hi,

My virgin mobile is set to wi-fi but each month it goes over it 5gb data and it's costing money. Account refreshed yesterday and it's already used 1gb data from 00:28hrs to 09.26hrs (11 events) while at home on the wi-fi? Why???

Re: Going over 5gb data every month???

Hi Bets50,

something seems wrong here.

All smartphones use some data when enabled even when WIFI is available, some Apps require it.
Your phones WIFI may "go to sleep" whilst your phone is in standby.

But the usage should only be very small amounts, certainly no where near 1GB overnight.

Until the reason for this can be found, I would recommend that you turn mobile data OFF on your phone whilst at home to prevent this.

Re: Going over 5gb data every month???

Would be helpful if you post what make and model your phone is, it could just need settings changed, like - app updates are done over WiFi only ect.

Re: Going over 5gb data every month???

Not owning a iPhone, that has stopped me helping :-(

But I'm sure other iPhone owners will now provide some help for you :-)

Re: Going over 5gb data every month???

Hi Bets50,

Welcome to the forums Smiley Happy

I want to get this sorted for you. Are you able to turn off Wi-Fi assist by going to settings > Mobile data and scrolling to the bottom?

This will stop the phone using Mobile Data when using Wi-Fi. Let me know how you get on with this.

Thanks,

Mat

Re: Going over 5gb data every month???

Hi

Thanks for your response - it was switched on and have turned it off today.

Silly question tho - does this mean she will not have internet access on her phone unless she is at home now?

Re: Going over 5gb data every month???

Hi Bets50,

Wi-Fi assist will not prevent you from using Mobile data &colonSmiley Wink

Your daughter will be able to browse on data and Wi-Fi.

Thanks,

Mat

Re: Going over 5gb data every month???

Thank  you

By turning off the wi-fi assist it does seem to be using much less data. So fingers crossed no more expensive bills.

Thanks again for all the help,
