Ok so I know my S5 did convert them from sms into multi media messages, I have now set multi media messages to restricted and set it up to receive alerts, I have also set the input to GSM alphabet so do the emotions still cost as an MMS or is it ok now?
There's a basic set of emoticons that is sent as two or three characters - messages containing these will go as text messages. There's an extended set that isn't on the S5 menu, but if you know them and set up your messaging to use the unicode alphabet, you'll still be free. Although unicode messages max out at about 200 characters (in three texts) with the stock messaging app.
Anything you send which doesn't use a built-in emoticon will go as MMS, as will large messages, group messages, or combos; and will be chargeable.
