I would be flying away to the European mainland soon and I would like to be able of using data on my mobile when abroad.
I have read the following info:

At what stage should I order the Travel Pass? that is upon arrival to destination, before departure or it doesn't matter?
Is anything more cost effective than that?

if you view your account on line, look for "Manage your services" and check that "Roaming is ON
Or give the Virgin mobile customer services a call on 789 or 0345 6000 789 and ask them to confirm that roaming is on.
(Once it is on it can stay on so that your phone will work anytime abroad - this isn't the travel pass)
I would also advise you to save the Virgin mobile UK support line number in your phone +447953 967 967 (just in case of any problems).

you can only activate your travel pass from abroad, then it's for upto 30 days from then.
So wait until you are at your destination and wish to start using mobile data before you text BUY (10,50 or 250)MB to 23456

When you say:
you mean the DataRoaming should be active at all the times abroad?
What about Mobile Data? I guess this one should be also active so I can receive texts and calls
