I got a text from 'virginmedia' that says simply "Sadly, we can't insure your mobile phone any more. So we've cancelled you policy and your cover ends 19/05". I.e. yesterday - thanks for the warning!

No, but if it's the free insurance, you're better off without it. The excess is excessive and the exclusions include the sort of accidents that make insurance necessary.
If it was the paid-for insurance, there are insurers out there who will offer similar levels of cover for less.
