Can I change my mobile number to stop a text scam?

My wife has recently fallen for a text scam and she is being charged weekly for receiving texts she did not request. Virgin are refusing to bar the texts. Firstly, can she change her Virgin mobile number and would this stop the charges being applied to her account?

Any advice welcome.

Thanks

Hi alanbalm,

Virgin aren't able to block these premium texts for you & simply using something like a call blocker on your wife's phone isn’t going to prevent her from being charged.

Changing your wife's number may be an option as a last resort but first try this:

They often use a shortcode (about 5 numbers). Texting back “STOP ALL” should end the service.

If this doesn’t work you can complain to PhonePayPlus - 0300 30 300 20
They are the UK regulator for premium rate SMS.

@Alexkid

The number would already be charged at network level prior to this hitting the device. The call blocker / SMS blocker would only merely hide the text or delete on receipt , however , this would be too late

Although alanbalm , Alexkids idea of texting back STOP ALL is more ideal as this would unsubscribe you from the service.

Re: Can I change my mobile number to stop a text scam?

Alex, Lee, thank you both for your response. I have sent the stop text to the short code that Virgin told us - we hadn't seen the code anywhere so I hope they've given me the right one.

If that does not stop them then I'll try Phonepayplus. Trouble is they ask for a copy of the original text that we allegedly signed up from. We do not still have it, but why would we if we didn't know we'd initiated anything from it. I.e. we don't even know the name of the company that are scamming us.

Re: Can I change my mobile number to stop a text scam?

Hi alanbalm

Glad its looking positive for you!

What was the number they told you to text and ill see if i can find more information for you Smiley Happy

If you ring the company that charged you. they would tell you when you subscribed and how it was done.

Sometimes it can be subscribed via an App, texting the code initially ( 6 digit short code) or through the web

Re: Can I change my mobile number to stop a text scam?

Lee,

The code given to us is 60061. The number that appears on her bill is 700046144.

Virgin also gave us a number to call the company but when we called a recorded message told us to call again on Friday - which is the day the next payment is due to be taken. The number is 02037349251. I've done a search on this number but nothing shows up.

Thanks for your help.

Re: Can I change my mobile number to stop a text scam?

Hi Alanbalm,

I've looked into this on my side and I can see the exact same info you were given. Did you manage to give them a call regarding this?

Let me know as soon as you can.

Thanks,

Mat

Re: Can I change my mobile number to stop a text scam?

Hi Mat,

Yes, we called the company again and they have ceased taking the payments. We have complained to them about the scam and we have also began official proceedings through Phonepayplus with a claim for reimbursement of all payments.

Thank you for the follow up.
