Call and data charges from Switzerland

I know Switzerland is not in the EU, but...

it was always included with the EU for the purposes of mobile phone roaming charges.

Something seems to have changed (or is it just a glitch??)

calls (pay monthly/DD) now cost an eye-watering 75p/minute from Switzerland? (compared with 16p/minute from EU countries

Just to complicate matters, for the purposes of buying a data pass, Switzerland does still seem to be grouped with the EU.

So to my questions:

1) Have I got my costs right?

2) What happened - why is travel to Switzerland suddenly being penalised?

3) Why the confusion (out of EU for calls, in EU for data pass)?

Re: Call and data charges from Switzerland

I've sorted the problem.

Instead of paying £20 for a 250MB Travel Pass which no one can tell me definitively will work in Switzerland, and still suffering the insult of 75p/minute for calls (minimum one minute charge, etc), I've signed up with Three for a £14 monthly rolling contract, which is country agnostic around much of Europe - including Switzerland.

So that leaves me £6 better off to start, 1GB data instead of 250MB, 0p/minute instead of 75p/minute. Oh yes, texts at no costs as well.

It really is a no-brainer, if you are thinking of a Travel Pass, think of a one month contract with Three instead, and avoid that irritating feeling that you are being royally ripped off.

The only fly in the ointment is a change of phone number. But hey, Virgin, there's a fix for that as well!

Re: Call and data charges from Switzerland

I would make sure 100% first that the EU data pass would work in Switzerland, on the cost calculater page it say's data is 50p @meg, on the countries where the data pass works - they do not list a price for data.

Re: Call and data charges from Switzerland

Good point!

It says the following:

From within the European Union*, Switzerland, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein:
Mobile Web10MB Travel Pass = £1.50Text 'BUY 10MB' to 23456
50MB Travel Pass = £6Text 'BUY 50MB' to 23456
250MB Travel Pass = £20Text 'BUY 250MB' to 23456

But who knows if it is correct?

(Norway is not in the EU either, but it still seems to enjoy near-EU rates)

Re: Call and data charges from Switzerland

Yeah, I saw that too.

All the other ones listed there do not have a price for data, only Switzerland does, makes me think it did cover Switzerland, now it doesn't and they have forgotten too take it off that list.

Re: Call and data charges from Switzerland

And then on this page, Norway and a few others drop out of the running for the 'EU' Travel Pass, but Switzerland is still listed.

Could someone from Virgin in a position to know please advise me of the current correct position for calling, texts and Travel Pass in Switzerland?

It is not lost on me that if I went to Three, I would not be having any of this hassle.

Re: Call and data charges from Switzerland

the more you look for information, the more confused it gets:

Texts when abroad:

From within the European Union, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and Switzerland: 8p a text

All other regions: 35p a text

(note, if you lookup individual EU countries like France, texts cost 5p, not 8p)

alternatively:

Switzerland

Service Cost
Making a Call75p (per minute)
Recieving a Call0p (per minute)
Sending an SMS25p

Re: Call and data charges from Switzerland

I'll confuse you even more. lol

Texts in the EU are 5p at present

EDIT: just seen on your post that you have already noticed that :-(

Re: Call and data charges from Switzerland

I edited my post just as you were replying!

Note further that they can't spell receiving either. It really does not give much confidence.
