Are Virgin UK Pay Monthly iphones unlocked?

I've ordered an Apple iphone SE 64GB Pay Monthly and would like to know whether it comes unlocked out of the box and supports any network.

Re: Are Virgin UK Pay Monthly iphones unlocked?

Hi eegalex,

my understanding is that all iPhones unless purchased directly from Apple lock to the network of the first SIM inserted.

Re: Are Virgin UK Pay Monthly iphones unlocked?

Thank you AlexKid, that would be quite inconvenient for me since I travel to Ireland & France quite regularly and will be using the local sim cards.

I read at one of the Ofcom forum posts that all Virgin Pay Monthly phones are sold unlocked ( http://consumers.ofcom.org.uk/phone/mobile-phones/changing-provider/mobile-phone-locking-and-unlocki... ) but might be different for iphones as you said.

Re: Are Virgin UK Pay Monthly iphones unlocked?

Hi eegalex,

my recommendation would have been, if you want to purchase an iphone from Virgin Mobile, call and speak to the sales team.

Some phones have a record facility. If not and you're using a smartphone perhaps you could download one.
(I have an Android phone and installed "Automatic Call Recorder" - it was free and works well).

Ask if the iPhone you purchase will be unlocked and allow you to use other network SIM's as this is your intention.

If when you receive it, it does then great. If not, then Virgin will be obliged to unlock it for you.

Either way, you have an unlocked iPhone.

Post back here on this forum to let us know how you got on. Others may be asking the same question.

Re: Are Virgin UK Pay Monthly iphones unlocked?

My understanding with iPhone's is:

Buying direct from Apple, you can request and buy a truly unlocked phone.

Buying from any retailer, you will get a "sim free" phone and these will lock to the first network used. :-(
