my understanding is that all iPhones unless purchased directly from Apple lock to the network of the first SIM inserted.

my recommendation would have been, if you want to purchase an iphone from Virgin Mobile, call and speak to the sales team.
Some phones have a record facility. If not and you're using a smartphone perhaps you could download one.(I have an Android phone and installed "Automatic Call Recorder" - it was free and works well).
Ask if the iPhone you purchase will be unlocked and allow you to use other network SIM's as this is your intention.
If when you receive it, it does then great. If not, then Virgin will be obliged to unlock it for you.
Either way, you have an unlocked iPhone.

My understanding with iPhone's is:
Buying direct from Apple, you can request and buy a truly unlocked phone.
Buying from any retailer, you will get a "sim free" phone and these will lock to the first network used. :-(
I buy new iPhone via official app store not retailer
