As I did not want to loose the programme I was recording I left it as it was. But I was told later by my wife that the same thing had happened to her on several odd occasions. As the box was also running slow and at random times going into sleep or standby mode for no reason I contacted the help desk. I did the reset that they advised and will wait and see if that works. So far as far as I am concerned this box is complete rubbish and I am seriously considering using my rights under the consumer laws to cancel my contract as it obviously is not fit for the purpose it was intended for.
