i'm trying to do self install for my mother. she used to have cable tv from telewest (many years ago).
I've attached a photo of the inside of her wallsocket; there is a splitter that's connected to the coax cable from outside.
Can't get any joy from the hub set up.
Is the splitter adequate or need upgrading?
I've tried connecting in through tv connection without success. Am I missing anything?

There are three possibilities:
1) The drop line is no longer connected at the cabinet, or is damaged in some way, or the outer coupler with the drop has become corroded.
2) Signal levels are out of spec.
3) The isolator/diplexer in the photo is faulty.
You have connected correctly, so I should call customer services & ask for a tech to come & check things.
