Ultra-slow TiVo boot-up

Hi, folks. I've just "upgraded" to a TiVo from my bog-standard Virgin box. Is it normal for the TiVo to take between three and five minutes to boot up when I switch it on of an evening? The "old and inferior" box used to take about a minute and I'm looking back at those times with some fond nostalgia...

Re: Ultra-slow TiVo boot-up

TiVo is designed to stay in standby when not in use because things happen in the background. It is normal for it to take up to 5 minutes to start up from being switched off.

Re: Ultra-slow TiVo boot-up

Thanks for your reply, which came faster than a TiVo boot-up.

It's not particularly environmentally friendly to design a box to be left in stand-by mode, is it?

I very much dislike leaving black goods plugged in, especially over night. I guess I'll just have to live with an interminable boot-up – either that, or get my old box back from Virgin. I can do that, right?

Re: Ultra-slow TiVo boot-up

From my perspective the TiVo is an excellent piece off technology. Most of the shows I watch are broadcast between 8pm and midnight (and there are a lot of them). I'm not always in a position to watch them live or plan to reschedule them when there are clashes. The TiVo does this for me. If I were to turn it off I would miss most of these. It's worth the extra pennies spent.

Re: Ultra-slow TiVo boot-up

I got by perfectly well with my old box, if I'm honest. It had the catch-up facility, which was far quicker to navigate, so I'd never miss the few programmes that I'd really want to see. I simply cannot grasp what useful extra features a TiVo has to offer that would justify its teeth-grindingly clunky "user experience".

Re: Ultra-slow TiVo boot-up

There is a power save setting in  Settings  ->  Devices.

When used it will use very little power when in standby and will turn TiVo off if you do not use it for more than 2 hours.  But will still record stuff if required.

TiVo receives guide updates around the clock - and you will miss these if the box is off.

Re: Ultra-slow TiVo boot-up

I was recently in the situation where I was 5 weeks behind in my viewing, well passed the catch-up facility. My TiVo worked flawlessly and I was able to catch up.

Re: Ultra-slow TiVo boot-up

Cheers for the technical advice, Lurgod. Much appreciated.

Not being a series junkie, I can't conceive of a time when I'll be wanting to catch up on a week's worth of telly, let alone several.

Re: Ultra-slow TiVo boot-up

Can I ask why you upgraded (or downgraded, depending on your perspective) to TiVo?

Re: Ultra-slow TiVo boot-up

I found that my monthly bill for landline, broadband and TV had suddenly rocketed from about £30 to £50 for no good reason, so I phoned up Virgin and said: "You're not exactly rewarding customer loyalty here, are you?"

The nice man at the call centre said something along the lines of: "Don't go to Sky! Have a discount and upgrade to a TiVo gratis..."
