Is the noise your getting from the box a clicking noise?
If a clicking noise then this means the hard drive internal to the box is failing, Virgin tends to "re-use" equipment instead of issuing brand new hardware in order to save on costs but unfortunately this can result in some issues such as this.
Call customer service to advise them of this and see if they can replace the box, if they refuse then as you have just joined you have 14 days to cancel, threaten them with this and this should "encourage" them to get it replaced.
