Tivo - Partial recordings, live channels sometimes glitching on black screens.. signal problems?

Recently I have noted a couple of odd issues with our Tivo box, which make me concerned about the quality of the signal it's receiving. All seemed to be fine with it until our broadband was upgraded to 150Mb towards the end of last year, but since then there's been the occasional problem - I think a splitter might have been adjusted / installed as part of the Superhub changeover at the time, but I might be wrong?

Problems have been noted in three main forms:

1. When watching live TV, the channel will occasionally seem to 'glitch' and lose signal for 1-2 seconds. This primarily happens when watching music channels in the mornings, and particularly when the channel goes to a black screen between videos. Rarely it'll be out for long enough for a 'no signal' message to flash up briefly, but most times this is not the case. Also, some days there'll be no problems at all, sometimes it's noticeable 2-3 times in an hour.

2. A few times, a recording will only record partially. This most recently happened on Saturday, where a program recorded between 10am and 10:30am only actually recorded from around 10:26am through to the end of the customary four minute overrun buffer (10:34am). There's no apparent reason for why this would happen, with no other recordings scheduled for the same time - on the instance noted above the box was on standby and not in use.

3. On about three occasions in the last six months, while watching either recordings or Live TV, the box has reset itself unexpectedly and with no warning.

I've looked at the values shown on the diagnostics screen of the Tivo box, and judging by the levels noted in other posts both here and on other forums, they seem quite low in some instances. As an example, here's what they were reading as of about half an hour ago:

Cable modem
AGC signal level: 80%
SNR: 41 dB

Channel sources
Tuner: 0 - Signal strength: 46% / SNR: 43 dB / AGC signal level: 0%
Tuner: 1 - Signal strength: 49% / SNR: 37 dB / AGC signal level: 0%
Tuner: 2 - Signal strength: 49% / SNR: 38 dB / AGC signal level: 0%

Any ideas what could be causing the problems noted above, and if these signal readings are potentially linked? 90% of the time all is working fine... but the remaining 10% can be very annoying when it happens...

Re: Tivo - Partial recordings, live channels sometimes glitching on black screens.. signal problems?

Hi MaffewE,

Thanks for coming by Smiley Happy

I am sorry to hear about the disruptions you've had with the TiVo®, I'd like to help check this out for you.

I have carried out a few checks with the box remotely and your connection and all is looking great at the moment.  I am not finding any detectable signal issues here.  Sometimes they can drop out intermittently so it maybe all is ok right now but they drop out occasionally.

What I'd like to do is arrange for an engineer to call round and check the equipment out and ensure all is setup ok for you.  I will send you a private message with details of the next steps.

Look for the envelope icon above.

Re: Tivo - Partial recordings, live channels sometimes glitching on black screens.. signal problems?

Hi Collette,

Thanks for your reply, it is much appreciated.. and sorry for the delay in responding. Things had seemed pretty okay for a while, so I'd left it for a bit to see if the pleasant trend continued.

Sadly, it didn't. There seems to have been a whole collection of issues in the last thirty hours or so - and not just with TV:

- Watching the football yesterday and other channels this morning, there's been more instances than usual of the one-second or so dropouts. This only seems to affect certain channels - such as BT Sport and the MTV music channels - but it affects them quite a bit.

- Meanwhile when I was using broadband last night, I noted it seemed a bit sluggish and erratic. I checked the status on the Superhub, and it showed that one of the upstream channels was 'aborted' following a huge run of 20+ errors at around lunchtime on Thursday. Downloads, too, seemed very variable. I rebooted the Superhub and the upstream channel came back, but speeds were still variable (if by a lesser extent).

- Then this morning, it appears the broadband had another freakout. I think the log from the Superhub shows it best:

As of right now the broadband connection again seems fine, running at full speed quite happily and with no evident issues. However, going back to the television, having checked an MTV channel for a bit, it didn't take that long for two more drop-outs to be noticeable between music videos.

Are you aware of any problems in the last couple of days affecting my area that could have caused the problems listed above? Are you able to access anything at your end that could shed any light on what's been going on, and if there's any reason for concern? It's notable and somewhat concerning that we seem to be having a lot more niggles and issues in recent months with both TV and broadband, after little reason to contact you in the years prior.

The offer of a visit from an engineer has been noted, and will be responded too separately via the private message discussion! Smiley Happy
