TiVo noise

I understand that the TiVo will rumble because of the HDD...but why should it rumble all the time, it isn't doing anything, surely it should be silent when inactive..?

Re: TiVo noise

When TiVo is on then the hard disk is going all the time as the three tuners have a 'live buffer' i.e. they're always recording a part of the channel they're on.

This allows you to do things like rewind and pause Live TV, or if you start a recording of a show, add the available part of the show before the point where you pressed record.

When TiVo is in standby the hard disk only spins up when it needs to record a planned recording or a suggestion normally (there may be the occasion where TiVo needs to do some housekeeping as well)
