TiVo box

Due to speaking to someone with a strong foreign accent there was a misunderstanding and I have been sent a TiVo box.
I have Sky tv and it seems to me that TiVo is not really any use to me.
Am I right?

Presumably you haven't signed a contract for TiVo? Did you phone them for any reason? Obviously they thought you wanted a TiVo! 

Either way the only thing to do is ring 0345-454-1111 to sort it out

It was a speculative phone call from Virgin. No contract.

Do you have other Virgin services (cable\Internet)?

In which case it sounds like you've added TV to your package and have been sent a self-install kit. If you haven't already got Virgin services then who knows what's going on, as the TiVo can't be used without a VM cable connection!
