A few things to point out.
A) The coax feeding the TiVO is VM's property.
B) It is also a shared connection with all your neighbouring customers on the local street cabinet. Unauthorised changes could not only affect your connection, but theirs as well, as it may cause leakage of noise (unwanted signals) into the network segment through using non-standard cabling etc.
C) The cabling used is specially made for VM to stop problems occuring as in B above.
D) If your signal levels are borderline, adding more cable could also cause problems.
As already suggested, the longer HDMI cable is the preferred option. VM only provide pre-made coax cables up to 3m long.
