Cancelling virgin media contract early?

Virgin media have failed to keep up their end of the contract and I have had enough with the inconsistent service and want to terminate our contract with virgin media. I've been told that the potential fix for the problem of appalling speeds and high ping, is months down the line and then that has only been "Estimated" - http://community.virginmedia.com/t5/Up-to-30Mb-Speed/Slow-speeds-High-Ping-Peak-Times/td-p/1748830

My question is has anyone else been in a similar position, do I still have to pay the early connection fee http://store.virginmedia.com/the-legal-stuff/terms-and-conditions-for-fibre-optic-services/early-disconnection-fees.html since the reason I am leaving is because I am not getting what I am paying for. They had offered a month by month credit, but I require a stable internet connection.
Thanks

David.
