Online games experiencing severe lag and ping spikes.

Hello,

 

I am customer in CB22 5BP, South Cambridgeshire, experiencing severe ping spikes, lag and "rubber-banding" in online games, notably Battlefield 3 and Star Trek Online. BF3 even experiences such issues even in servers in the UK and mainland Europe. This has been an issue for some months now and is getting ridiculous as the games have been rendered unplayable as making accurate actions in games is impossible.

 

PingTest and SpeedTest detect no issues with local and other European servers.

My household have been customers of Virgin Media since NTL broadband and we've always experienced great customers service whenever a problem has arisen. I hope this is a trend that will continue in identifying and resolving this issue.

Oh, and just to clarify I am playing over ethernet, not Wi-Fi.

Hi Stoobie_Land,

 

I've checked your connection and everything looks perfectly fine. I know the pings and speeds are fine but if you know the servers you use could you run some traceroutes? This would help us identify where the issue begins.

Hi Stoobie_Land,

 

From the looks of those traceroutes the pings fly up off our network so it is likely an issue at the server end. You can try putting your hub into modem mode for half an hour which will give you a different WAN IP and so the route to the server will be different. As the issue begins on the far end though, this may not fix it. Certainly worth a try though.
