Slow Usenet speeds on 100mb in Bromley

Hi,

In the past month or so I have been getting slow Usenet download speeds. I worked when I first got the service in May. I am in the Bromley network.

Today I got 94mb at Speedtest.net but around 10mb usemet download from news-europe.giganews.com.

Speeds vary at any time not just peak. Yesterday I was getting 8mb on Saturday I was getting 6mb both at off peak times.

I have tried different servers and ports 80, 119, 443 all with the same result.

If this is the result of traffic shaping I wish Virgin would be honest, if it isn't does anyone have any idea who we can escalate this to so it can be fixed. I rang customer services and they didn't even know what Usenet was.

Thanks in advance.

Hi lewell

Usenet and Peer to Peer trafficmay be throttled between 5:00pm and Midnight separately from the individual user traffic management.

Re: Slow Usenet speeds on 100mb in Bromley

Hi Steve

Never used it before but I will try. Is this the correct server:

  • News (NNTP) Server - news.virginmedia.com
  • News server: port number - 119

Do I need a username and password? If I already have one I have no idea what it is. Would I need to ring customer service.

Thanks for all your help.

Re: Slow Usenet speeds on 100mb in Bromley

Tried the virgin newsgroup server and it's the same.

At 20:30 Saturday I got 6mb download and at 08:30 on a Sunday I got 12mb, even though speedtest.net results state I have 94mb download speeds on both occasions.

I am positive that I am being throttled as if I have a 10mb service even though I have 100mb.

Is someone able to raise this as a fault for me please? This started happening when traffic management was first implemented, before then I was able to get full 100mb usenet download speeds.
