High downstream power level

I recently upgraded from 20mb to 100mb (XXL) and the speed seems to fluctuate greatly. I didn't really know what I was looking for but I see most other peoples power levels are in single figures while mine are in the twenties.

Re: High downstream power level

Hiya,

You will need to call VM on 150 and get an Engineer Booked out to see you. They will Lower the Powerlevels and your Internet will be much faster. They are way too high.

Please see the Power Levels/SNR sticky for more information on the effects of this.  I assume you're near the street cabinet.  But I would have expected your upstream power to be lower.  Is it stable at c. 45 dBmv or does it fluctuate by more than 1 dBmv?

Re: High downstream power level

Thank you all, I will call Virgin and get them to sort it out.

I am fairly near the cabinet yes. The connection is stable as in I don't suffer disconnects but the performance goes all over the place. One moment I can pull 103mb, the next it'll be in the 30's, this is via ethernet not wifi. I've never encountered an issue with my upload, that stays around the 5mb mark even when the download is fluctuating.

Some time ago on my 20mb package I was suffering disconnects and was told the power on my line was too low and needed to be raised, perhaps they were a little keen.

Re: High downstream power level

Hi tWm_

I have checked your connection to the network and I can see that the power levels are still very high.

I can see that you have called us since your first post and a technician has been booked for you.

Please let us know the outcome of the tech visit.

Re: High downstream power level

[ Edited ]

Engineer came and fitted an attenuator to the back of the Superhub which brought the levels down from the low twenties to about 6.

However, my Internet stopped working this morning so I reset the Superhub and now my power levels are all in minus figures.

Lock Status Modulation Channel ID Max Raw Bit Rate Frequency Power SNR Docsis/EuroDocsis lockedLocked QAM256 26 55616000 Kbits/sec 306750000 Hz -3.8 dBmV 38.7 dB Hybrid Locked QAM256 25 55616000 Kbits/sec 298750000 Hz -4.2 dBmV 38.3 dB Hybrid Locked QAM256 27 55616000 Kbits/sec 314750000 Hz -3.5 dBmV 38.9 dB Hybrid Locked QAM256 28 55616000 Kbits/sec 322750000 Hz -3.4 dBmV 39.0 dB Hybrid

My apologies if the formatting of that has gone, I'm not sure how to retain it when I paste it from the hub screen.

I assume the power on the network in my area must have been lowered in the last week which means with the effects of the attenuator I'm now in minus figures?

Just checking if I'm okay to remove it for the purpose of testing or whether I should be calling out an engineer, again?

Should have mentioned, the attenuator is 15db.

With those SNR levels, the downstream power is OK.  In the winter the power level wil rise by c. 3 dBmv.

If you need it examining why the internet might have stopped working, we'd need to see full stats including upstream plus the event log.

Perhaps do that if it stops again and note what the top light is doing when it stops.

For example, if the upstream is struggling, you might see high upstream power; eventually  it gives up and reinitialises; that is the same as "stops working".

As to formatting, a simple copy & paste does it for most people.  PPutting it through a word processor usually screws it up.  Of course after your post you could edit it tidy-ish like I did for you

Re: High downstream power level

[ Edited ]

My internet was down again this morning and I had to reboot the Superhub as I couldn't even log into it over the network. The top light on the hub was blue and stuck on with no blinking at all.

My line power however now seems to be at -1 rather than -3

As requested here are the various pieces of information from the hub

I have been noticing that loading sites has been slow, not in terms of content but getting there to begin with, as if the DNS is lagging. I tried using Google's DNS servers but can't say that it made any noticeable difference.

The only other things I notice is I now have a new IP address as of this morning which is much different to before starting 213. rather than 88.
