DLINK DIR-615 and VMNG300 Router limiting speeds and causing issues

So i finally have a more stable connection, but last night the internet dropped round 5am. so i thought i would try just the VMNG300 no router attached. Didnt work so i went out to do what i had to and when i returned internet was back up and i started browsing, everything seemed faster so i did some tests.

Download to Preston that normally sits at 95 MBits jumped to 106 Mbits

Download to Bournemouth normally sits at 40-50 Mbits jumped to 105 Mbits

Downloads to Paris normally sit at 60ish Mbits jumped to 99.10 Mbits

This would imply that the DIR615 is causing a part of my issue.

With out the Dlink IP address 77.100.174.182

With the DIR615 IP address 62.31.73.66

Why would this happen? I have tried two different routers both provide less that what the modem would on its own. they are using the same Blue ethernet cables that came with the modem.

As you can see the UPLOAD is pretty consistent regardless of the equiptment. the jitter is also a little higher with the router compared to just the router

So i know the modem supports more that 100 Mbits ive seen it. Yet i need the router for the whole FAMILY to use the internet. So please can you explain why this is the case and what you can do to fix this, would be happy with a better router, as both DLINK routers i have 1 running DDWRT and 1 unused(untill today) DLINK from VM direct if you have a product then the equipment provided should work with it well. not make it worse.

Re: DLINK DIR-615 and VMNG300 Router limiting speeds and causing issues

It is dependant on the WAN>LAN throughput available on the router.

The DIR-615 has a WAN>LAN throughput of around 87Mb'ish according to the below website, it can potentially be more dependant on what the router is doing at the time of testing and what firmware is in use.  However it is definately limited in its potential to supply full WAN>LAN throughput required for a 100Mbit service;

Re: DLINK DIR-615 and VMNG300 Router limiting speeds and causing issues

Thanks for the reply falcon. i see where the issue is.

Surely VM should provide a router that works at more than what this one does. In my experience the VMNG300 out performs the SH in every operation, and i bet it does not have a better overall WAL-LAN that the DLINK does.

I cant afford the cost the routers in that list and some of them look amazing, id be happy if VM would provide a router capable of using the whole connection for the whole family

VM supply the SuperDud and no longer supply individual routers. It's a shame for you if you can't afford a new router. You'll need one when eventually you have to take a SuperDud - although quite how VM will force that remains to be seen.

No quarrel with that - but good luck with their stupid Home Hub!

Re: DLINK DIR-615 and VMNG300 Router limiting speeds and causing issues

Not quite. I've got a DLINK DIR-615 attached to my BT Infinity service. Works perfectly fine on the 40 meg service. I'm investigating whether it's slowing my 80 meg service down - I think it is which is the problem you're hitting with the 100 meg VM service.

But the BT HH will adequately serve the 80 meg wired environment; it's just not as configurable as a real router.

Re: DLINK DIR-615 and VMNG300 Router limiting speeds and causing issues

I built my own custom dual wan router using pfsense and some old pc equipment I had lying around which matches/exceeds some enterprise grade equipment.

Spec;

AMD 3200+

2GB DDR

8GB SSD (pulled out of a broken dell mini laptop and have never had a use for it until now)

1x 1Gb Nic for internal LAN

1x 1Gb Nic for VMNG300

1x 100Mb onboard Nic for BT infinity PPPoE

It is massive overkill for a home made router, however it is quite possibly the best addition to my network setup ive added for a while.  I was using a WNR3500 netgear which is capable of 100Mb+ WAN>LAN but it would fall on its face with large amounts of connections.

  • More **bleep** ive not yet scratched the surface of for my requirements

You can find out more info of this FreeBSD software at http://www.pfsense.org/

Here are some screenshots, if anyone would like any information of how to setup such a system let me know.

BT infinity connection is currently being re-wired as the cat5e is being routed outside and around the house so its currently off while I do this.
