Re: Why will OD only pause for three minutes

I amd concerned that this problem has been talked about for so long with no promised changes being made. WHEN will it be sorted?

I don't believe that any of the issues discussed with the TiVo software itself have been fixed as yet. I think the last software update was towards the beginning of this year, and the next update is rumoured to be in October, though no-one, forum staff included actually know the content of this update.

The upcoming update does respond directly to a lot of the issues raised in this forum and we do use this forum to gauge priorities regarding feature development. As I have said a number of times before, I don't feel comfortable sharing the current composition of this update due to its potential to change. I also do not want to pre-empt any press facing statements we release for the update.

Just to manage expectations, although our CEO has mentioned a "second drop" in October, this does not mean that all functionality development we have planned for the second half of this year will be delivered precisely in the same code release. The anticipated launch dates for these developments are staggered over the general time period that was quoted.

The 3 minute pause timer is simply due to the fact that we have a finite amount of bandwidth dedicated to VoD streaming, and each customer's usage of this bandwidth is the same whether they are paused on an VoD asset or if it is playing. Therefore, we've had to set a reasonable time limit to avoid situations where this bandwidth is maxed out, in which case, other customers attempting to access video on demand will see a "Video on Demand is not available at this time" message. This time limit was formulated to avoid this contention as often as possible. For movies, this shouldn't be a huge issue as you can start right where you left off if the asset is stopped. For all other programmes, we do try to give as much flexibility as possible by allowing you to skip forward towards each white bar from the beginning using the FF and 30-sec skip keys (and we will increase the number of white bars per asset), but simply cannot support the database required to store a bookmark for every VoD programme. I think the only difference from the V+HD interface is that we allowed customers to "start from:" and they could enter in a time, as we have never supported bookmarks for all VoD assets.

Thanks,

Nick

Re: Why will OD only pause for three minutes

I cant use the skip 30seconds button on my tivo when watching on demand content. It simply doesn't work. So when it does time us out when we've paused the programme we have to use the slow forward (i mean fast forward) button  to try and get back to where we left off, which is really annoying.

This isn't as bad a problem if there was a way to start from a particular time like there is in sky+, but the tivo doesn't have that functionality. I hope some solution can be found!

you need to press FFWD and then press  >l

Some programmes have more markers than others though.  HTH

Hi Nick,

Of course we're not expecting you to jump the gun on any commercial announcements, and to a large extent even the timings of the software deliveries, but I think a lot of the posts on this forum could be negated, and the frustration alleviated by a simple sticky post detailing what work is in progress on the bug-fixes.

Something as simple as:

Subject: TiVo Work in Progress

Body:

The following items have been identified by the dev't team as work packages to be progressed towards inclusion in a future update.

  • Red button functionality
  • OD pause limitations (duration/start from)
  • Reminders
  • PIN locking
  • Text input

etc...

Nothing timing related, nothing to do with upcoming features or additional TiVo specific functionality, just something highlighting the work being undertaken by the team addressing the fixes that are being fervently discussed and even argued over on here.

Re: Why will OD only pause for three minutes

I understand what NickO is saying, but he didn't answer what we want. We want TiVo to act exactly like The V+ box, where you can pause VOD indefinitely. The V+ box disconnects after a few minutes (the same as TiVo), but it allows you to press Resume and it then re-connects and jumps forward to where it was paused at.

Not an unrealistic expectation, V+ does it! Don't mind TiVo disconnecting, but it needs to be able to reconnect and resume from where it left off.

Whatever V+ does, it works.

Re: Why will OD only pause for three minutes

I agree with cozmic!  Sort it out virgin, this is meant to be better than the V+ not worse.  Its a very frustrating thing to use at the moment and i spend most of my time moaning about it than watching it.
