Watching recorded Shows

Is there any way of skipping through recorded shows you have part watched without using the fast forward function.  What are the small white horizontal lines that show on the progress bar?

hit FF then hit skip and it jumps to the next white bar

If you mean, continue where you left off then that is the default when you return to a previously watched show.
