Tivo how do I set reminders

Got Tivo installed today after V+ Samsung was playing up, not sure of the Tivo so far as the HD picture doesn't look as sharp as the V+ but the sound is nicer at least. Anyway how do we set a reminder on this thing as I have went through all options without success.

Not sure on the Tivo seems nice and all but features missing such as red button, EPG seems much slower, and no numbers on the front of the box to indicate visually which channel your watching, will give it a couple of weeks but so far having to pay £3 on top of subscription not that impressed.

Unfortunately, the reminders feature is unavailable on the TiVo box at the moment - which does seem like a step backwards. However, reminders - as well as red button functionality - is due to be released shortly, I believe.

Re: Tivo how do I set reminders

If you are talking bout TiVo changing channels for you like v+ does at the start of a program you don't wanna miss then I'm afraid TiVo doesn't do this at all

It doesn't bother me much as I never use it on the v+ much anyways but if you are used to it then it'll be a pain. Option is to record the program you want to watch but not everyone wants to do that.

Re: Tivo how do I set reminders

It truly beats me how peoples memory is so bad that they need reminders but at the same time so good that they can memorise all the channel numbers only having to look at the front of the box that says for example 230 and know that they're on the nat geo channel, personally I just look at the giant Dog in the corner of the screen that tells you what channel you're watching

I cannot remember all the channel numbers, & there are no channel numbers on the TiVo box. It is also a matter of remembering which channel & the time, especially if you have your mind on something else, such as family, phone, door, loo, have a memory issue.....

[ Edited ]

We used the reminder feature all the time, was so handy to flick through the EPG and see the next days programmes and stick a reminder in. Now you have to record but if all you wanted to do was to watch not record then its not very practical.  Yes I could write down all the programs I wanted to watch or just record them but since the feature was on V+ it should be on this box.

To have a new box but not have features ready to roll from day 1 seems to me a little silly, it seems Virgin are the type of company who release products too soon and then promise coming soon.  Still will give it time and hope the Tivo grows on me, but at this moment missing the V+ so much, only took as the engineer said he could give us free installation and if we took at another time it would cost £49.95 to only then discover on the website VM where giving free installation anyway!

Have had to contact Virgin 3 times in the last few weeks to get them to replace equipment (modem, V HD & now V+ box), either they are giving out substandard equipment or I am just having a bad run of luck.

Reminder - you are obviously new to how a DVR is supposed to work. anyone who has had a Tivo for the last 10 years knows you set it to record and then forget about it until you are ready to watch it.

As for the front panel, what channel number do you want it to display out of the three it can be?

Re: Tivo how do I set reminders

Of course reminders ARE useful! Because you just want the tv channel to change to whatever you want to watch without having to remember what's on or check the guide.

The problem is, if you record it instead of setting a reminder, you then have to go select it from recordings because it is not going to automatically play like a live tv reminder. And if you've recorded something when you didn't want to keep it, then you've got to go to the trouble of deleting it as well. That is all extra work when all you wanted to do was watch a programme when it started! Recording everything right left and centre is not a substitute for no reminders.

More drawbacks with tivo is you can't cancel an advance recording from the tv guide or mini guide (like you can with V+), with tivo you have to go into a separate laborious menu. And with V+ you could press the record button while watching live tv and it would start recording straight away, but with tivo in live tv you have to press ok as well after the record button.

The V+box numbers display is useful when you are playing back recordings and you want to see how many minutes or hours have elapsed on what you are watching. And with V+ you could also see how far back in time you are from live tv when you pause or rewind, which I used to find useful. It is a big drawback that you can't see these numbers with the tivo box, and the tivo on screen display does not tell you how many minutes you are behind live tv, it just gives the hour of day you have rolled back to - I don't want to and can't calculate the time gap in my head to live tv just from looking at the rolled back hour.

With the V+ box the front display was clear when showing if you were in live tv or not, the words live tv would light up in green, or delay tv would light up in red. Useful because sometimes you would forget if you were watching live or rewinded tv.

You don't expect all these backward steps in progress when tivo is supposed to be more advanced. They should be adding not taking away good features.

I have only had my tivo box since today for a few hours and already I have noticed these things are not as good as V+. I think the picture seems less clear too. I would not recommend it to a friend and I regret paying the £49.95 installation.

Re: Tivo how do I set reminders

After getting a Fresat HD box I forgot how much I missed reminders, especially for live events. The same applies for the red button

I recall  the infamous 'coming soon' from VM as far back as  August on this issue. I've now given up.
