I have just got a Virgin package, including a TiVo box. I want to keep the TiVo box in a cupboard or a chest (I'll make sure there is some sort of ventilation) and still be able to use it via my remote. Some googling has led me to stumble over the concept of a remote extender.
However. All the descriptions of what these are and which ones are compatible with TiVo boxes rather assume that you understand the basics of how they work. I don't like playing the gender card, but I don't really get exactly what it is I need to buy, nor how to make it work. Is there anyone on here who might be able to help a poor, tech-illiterate female out?

The device you are looking for is normally referred to as a magic eye.
Have a read of
Or you could buy something like
There are lots of variations. If you google "Virgin tivo and magic eye" you will find lots of things about it and peoples opinions with different devices.

I also have my TiVo in a cupboard with the door shut. I use one of these:
Basically it has an infrared sensor on a cable that you place under your TV. When you point your TiVo remote at this it picks up the signal and then sends it along a cable. The other end of the cable, which receives the infrared commands from your TiVo remote, has tiny infrared transmitters that you place over the IR sensor on the front of your TiVo box.
This works like an absolute dream for me with my TiVo hidden out of sight.
