PDFs Not Opening In IE11

Windows 7 Ultimate and Internet Explorer 11.

This has only just started to happen to me although I see from Google that this is not a new phenomenon.   I try to open a .pdf file from a website and it seems to try but then all I get is a grey screen.  Is this just another example of Microsoft trying to cripple this browser or is there a reliable fix?

And no, I don't wish to use a different browser if I can help it.

Re: PDFs Not Opening In IE11

Sounds like a duff plugin.   Acrobat Reader will open PDF files if it's on your system; this is the usual method of opening files within a browser.  Try this link and see if it's any use:  https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/blank-pdf-page-ie11.html

Re: PDFs Not Opening In IE11

Why don't you look at one of the threads that a Google search throws up like this one for your solution:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/ie/forum/ie11-iewindows8_1/unable-to-view-pdf-files-on-internet-e...

I don't get this issue at all, but then I use a better browser with its own PDF reader built in - Chrome!

MS would like to dump IE11 in favour of win 10 Edge.

I do not work for VM. The advice I give is based on my best understanding of VM policy and practice. You rely on it at your own risk.

Edge is ruddy useless as they've stripped plugin support out of it completely.  Internets don't work on it properly. That's why they keep IE11 around!

Re: PDFs Not Opening In IE11

I agree about Edge, I find it hopeless, but if MS are going to keep IE11 going and I hope they will, then it would be nice if they kept it up to date.  The latest annoyance is that IE11 will no longer support Youtube HD videos, so now I have to revert to Firefox to see them.  Smiley Mad

Re: PDFs Not Opening In IE11

It could be just a Win 7 thing.  You could download a video player from elsewhere that supports IE11 and Win 7.  You cold try this: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.en_GB.html

Interesting, I use Edge all the  time and have no issues?  It also does support extensions (plugins), but not too many exist at this time.

Again, personally I don't use or need extensions. My surfing is simplistic Smiley Happy

Re: PDFs Not Opening In IE11

you do know that opining PDFs in IE is a huge security risk?

one misaken curious click on an "invoice" and its ramsonware payment time - you just had all your files irreversbly encrypted

. a " pdf" can silenty download all sorts of malware, and opeing it  in a browser just makes the malware coders job way easier.

far safer to open them in a proper PDFapp  with live links disabled,

but if you simply must.... resetting IE internet options to default and resetting/re-installing  adobe reader should sort

the broken plug in

Re: PDFs Not Opening In IE11

There's been a lot of hoo ha about about plugins (particularly Flash as it's over 20 years old).  Then again, the rest of the innernets ain't too clever either when it comes to security either.  This springs to mind as it happened a couple of days ago.Smiley Sad

and there's this from elsewhere on this forum too.Smiley Sad
