trying to watch sky sports on one of my registered devices, the pc
have updated firefox and silverlight, i log in ok, get as far as the blue spinning dots and then get the message above
any ideas ? already missed the first goal of the season
would a different browser help ? what is the best browser to use anyway ?

OK, I've gone in to the account for you and reset the PC device registration for use with the Sky Sports site.
If you can log in by selecting the Virgin Media logo first, then entering your details this should allow the registration to take place.

Currently it's not showing any registration from the PC.
Can you open Firefox for me and clear the cache, cookies and browsing history. Navigate to the Sky Sports website and click to sign in.
At this point make sure you are selecting the VM Logo to the left before entering in any details. Once you've entered your My VM details does the site allow you to sign in successfully?
Let me know before going anything further.
yes it let's me sign in
but i'm getting the same message as in the op

Now when you select a channel to stream, does the error come up at this point or when you click watch?
Does it even try to do anything after selecting 'watch'?
Did you try deleting the cache and cookies as mentioned above?
Also if you're still having an issue, then try in another browser to see if this helps.

very frustrating, especially when i can watch sky sports on my phone without a problem
of course i can watch the rest of tv anywhere on my pc but not on my phone

OK, the only other thing I can think of trying is following the steps in this post here: TV Anywhere - Sky Sports doesn't work - Solution
Another user seemed to have a similar fault and managed to resolve it by completing those actions.
My fingers are crossed that this will work but let me know either way.
