Why is it OK to cheat on speedtest?

Why is this considered OK?

Re: Why is it OK to cheat on speedtest?

Your VPN provider is likely overselling. The speeds I see on speedtest.net are speeds I see elsewhere on good servers; VM is a good provider in that they do not cheat when it comes to speedtests.

You may be seeing a contention issue, run a multi-stream test on TBB and let us know what the results are?

On mobile data my VPN is giving me about 35Mbps. It's not the VPN.

Re: Why is it OK to cheat on speedtest?

I have added two additional photos to that album.

On mobile data I get >20Mbps from fast.com, with VPN it's 28, without it's 23. Clearly my VPN is *not* throttling me when I use my Virgin connection.

I don't care about the speed I get from speed sites, the entire point of fast.com is that cheats like Virgin cannot game it - why is it acceptable that I pay for 100Mbps but on REAL LIFE SITES I get <5?

Re: Why is it OK to cheat on speedtest?

Ookla reports speeds of around 200Mb/s (I pay for 200) but no other test site comes anywhere close - Testmy gives me around 40 or less. The reasons are explained here http://testmy.net/ipb/topic/28902-why-do-my-results-differ-from-speedtestnet-ookla-speed-tests/#comm...

Ookla is a device for ISPs to defend themselves. It does not give useful information about download speeds. I regard VM's approach as cheating, similar to Volkswagen - designing systems around tests, not real life situations.

Re: Why is it OK to cheat on speedtest?

Now... I have to admit that I found this thing: http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php and having optimised my computer for faster download speeds, I am getting much better results from TestMy and others. Might be worth a go. Choose appropriate speed and tell it to optimise.
