Super Hub 3 is slow....really slow. How to fix?

Hello

I really hope someone can shed some light on my issue with Broadband & WiFi.

So we had the Super Hub 3 installed a little over a month ago we're on a 150MB broadband or supposedly thats what we're on. I've experienced very slow speeds on WiFi I'm talking almost dial up speeds! & drop outs when I am only within 5 metres of the router in the same room. Prior to this we had the Super Hub 2 & never experienced any issues at all. I've checked this during quiet times & busy time & can't see any improvements. I've tried playing with the channels again no improvement. The drop outs don't happen too often (SH2 never had drop outs) but the speed is annoying the hell out of me. Speed test on WiFi are appalling it took me 2 minutes just to load the page to carry out a test, I have a PC connected directly to the router also & speedtests is okay I've not seen it go over 100MB tried & tested at various times including into the early hours. Even getting into the router takes forever! I've done a ping google.co.uk -t & I can see it drops out with request timed outs, again didn't have this with super hub 2. I've checked all the cable connections already & they all seems fine. Restarted numerous times also.

Still not seeing any improvements in fact I could swear it's got worse since I last posted & everyone been away this weekend so I can't its because of usage.  Again WiFi is atrocious.  Someone must have an idea of what's going here?  Support??

Here's an update.

I put the router into Modem mode to test a few things maybe it needed an update from Virgin or something which wasn't being pushed, I'll trying anything now.  Done a speed test in modem mode & surprise surprise I'm still not getting what I am paying for I should be 150MB & like I said earlier I don't even get 100MB.  What is really intriguing is the Virgin Media Staff who answer posts on this forum.  It's been a few days since I posted my issue & I've noticed they've responded to other posts but not this??  Hell I've seen them post replies to posts within a few hours of OP posting but for this issue I've not heard a thing.  Virgin Media WHERE ARE YOU!!  I'm open to suggestions here.  I've posted detailed information regarding my issue but not heard a thing from you, are these not detailed enough?  Am I not being clear?  All I want as a paying customer is for you to fix this is it really too much to ask?

So I'm starting to discover a few things one of which is Virgin Media Customer service is horse sh#t but we'll come back to that.

I put the useless white brick they call 'Hub 3.0' back into router mode connected to WiFi on my laptop 2.4Ghz frequency & I kid you not I was setup right next the bloody thing & this is what I got:

As you can see a 37ms ping test puts this connection firmly into the horse sh#t category & personally I don't like paying a lot of money for horse sh#t which is clearly what I'm doing here.  For anyone readying this whether your Virgin Media Support, unfortunate customer or a lucky non customer.  I can tell you from experience, clearly I have some here now, save yourself the pain go elsewhere.  Oh & I hope to receive a message from support soon or anyone, really anyone who understands what the hell is going on here I mean look at those numbers just look at them its appalling.

Just a heads up to you. Every time you bump your thread with a new post you are putting yourself to the back of a queue for a reply. VM usually take around 2 days from your last post to reply (longer over the weekend)



You had nothing apparently obvious in your power levels. Wired test showing 90Mbs has an indication that your Ethernet cable or Ethernet port is not gigabit capable so won't go over 90Mbs (unless this is a contention issue, if you do more wired speed tests at different times it would show this)

Wifi is its own minefield of interference, especially on the 2.4ghz band, so won't even comment on those wifi tests.

Welcome to the forum and sorry to hear you're getting poor speeds. I've just checked your connection from here and can see no issues. Your power levels, SNR and area contention are all healthy. It sounds like Shafreya has hit the nail on the head in the post above. Could you check if your ethernet card is gigabit or 100/10?

It's been a while since my last post so I thought I'd give an update.  I tested the wired speed on my laptop which has a gigbit Ethernet port at various times & got varying speeds between 110 & 140.  As for the wireless I refuse to buy this excuse of interference 'minefield' as mentioned in my previous post I was using hub2 which NEVER had slow speeds as soon we moved to Hub3 it's been ridiculously slow on WiFi. I find it hard to believe within the space of 20 minute (thats how long it took to install & initialise when we first got it) we went from excellent WiFi speeds on hub2 to this on hub3.  You cannot say there are interferences created in 20 minutes or that all my devices which need 2.4Ghz have miraculously developed a fault.  I have checked the WiFi signals of neighbours & they are no where near my channel for 2.4Ghz, there are no other WiFi transmitting devices in my house or the neighbours (yes I really have checked)  To me it seems there is a fault with these hub3 & Virgin Media are not acknowledging it.  I always thought with every new device there is innovation but with this I feel it's gone backwards.

Thanks for getting back in touch. I'm sorry to see you have continued to have trouble with your speeds on wireless. 

 

I have had a look at your connection and things seem to be ok from this side. 

 

A lot of things can affect a wireless signal. Even moving the hub by 90 degrees can improve or change the signal. 

 

I can see you have already tried a lot of things, please have a look through this. If you're still not having any luck with it after that then we will see what we can do for the next step.

Thank for for getting back to me.  I should point out I am already aware of the link you have provided & have pretty much tried everything on there & nothing has improved performance for devices on 2.4Ghz frequency.

I once again checked channels in my area & nothing is anywhere near the frequency I am using.
I have restarted numerous times since my last post to no avail.
I've done tests with my laptop literally sat next to the Hub 3.0 & in other rooms throughout the house & the performance is the same.

As mentioned in my earlier posts this annoying slow speed has orrcured since we switched to Hub 3.0 we never had these issues with Hub2, within the space of a 20 minutes it's almost back to dial up speeds. when I visit webpages I can actually see the ads & images loading bit by bit just like they used to in dial up days.

Did a speed test today & this is what I got on my laptop in the same room as the router.

As it seems to be ongoing and I can't see any reason for it from this side. I would like to get an engineer out to take a look.
