Sporadic performance 8 to 41.5Mb on 70Mb package

I am trying to sort this out for my mum as she has rang Virgin support and they only seem interested in selling her a £35 package to 'fix' her computer to sort out her slow internet experience.  When I ran speedtest this evening using my laptop through her WiFi I see very sporadic performance of the internet speed across various tests from 8Mb to 41.5Mb.

Area 30 btw

This doesn't seem acceptable.  Can anyone help?

Well luckily I have my cable dongle with me, so just ran a test

 

 

Then disconnected from wired and back onto the wireless and very sporadic

Seems like wireless performing as wireless should perform.

By nature it is unstable. By nature it is sporadic. Anything can throw it off which is why if you care about speed/stability you will wire up.

I am sorry your mum is having some speed problems, as Shafreya mentioned you can not really rely on speed tests over wireless, however that does not mean that something may be amiss with the connection. The tests on Monday were hard wired into the router from my Windows 10 MS Surface device i7 8GB Ram

Thanks so much for getting back, I have taken a look at your mum's connection. The line and hub look good, all levels nicely within specification. Area streams noise and error free. Overall the area traffic is quite low however there is the odd spike in the evening that may impact speed or lag although difficult to be sure that is the problem. I wonder if anything is using up bandwidth in the background, it may well be worth trying some tests in modem only mode please Modem mode on your Virgin Media Hub and see how that goes.

My mum would normally only have one device; a tablet working over wireless.  There are no other devices attached, as can be seen through the admin screen of the Hub. When I am up next I will try modem mode.
