My bandwidth sucks in the evening <5mbps

Yes, I'm on wirless. No I'm not downloading some other large file.

I see a consistent pattern, during peak hours (evenings 1900 - 2200) my bandwidth is terrible. Yesterday it hit rock bottom at 1mbps.

Re: My bandwidth sucks in the evening <5mbps

you cannot test anything on wireless. test it wired first... use basic logic before complaining.

put an ethernet cable in the laptop or pc then put that in2 the ethernet on the hub then test speed.

Hi bonstio posting some basic diagnostic info may help.

Navigate to the hub's GUI using http://192.168.100.1
Don't log in, click the Router Status button in the top right of the screen.
Copy \ Paste the Downstream, Upstream, and Network Logs.

Don't worry about the formatting. But if you can do it wired it would be more helpful.

Re: My bandwidth sucks in the evening <5mbps

Thanks for the replies. As suggested, I tried wired ethernet. As expected, the results were consistent. It's 2118 and Virgin's network is busy ergo my bandwidth sucks; 2.17mbps measured by speedtest, with no other network activity.

It seems I'm not alone e.g. this post made 5 hours ago: http://community.virginmedia.com/t5/Speed/New-User-Poor-speeds/m-p/3354462#M152057.

Re: My bandwidth sucks in the evening <5mbps

dude, you need to actually post downstream and upstream power levels and snr on same tab to figure out issues.

Re: My bandwidth sucks in the evening <5mbps

Would be much easier to read if you taken a screenshot...

Seems your running at -5dbmv to -6dbmv which is kind low, have you got a small silver box on the back of your superhub? (attenuator on the end of the main cable to the router)

Re: My bandwidth sucks in the evening <5mbps

its within the acceptble range, chaging power levels wont solve this issue .

So everything is "working as intended"? The question is how to flag this to VM? Phoning supports connects me with India and some terrible scripted troubleshooting person who is duty bound to follow their flowchart rather than listen to reason, consider the evidence I've gathered here.

Oh and by the way, as we ease out of peak time (22:39 now) I'm expecting bandwidth to return to advertised speeds. Let's check: yep, it's on the increase. Still below par but currently holding at 27 mbps - http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/6094783228.

It's certainly looks like capacity issues.

Re: My bandwidth sucks in the evening <5mbps

I have no doubt he is part of the great high utilisation club so ye changing his power levels will do very little more than likely, that being said QAM256 power levels by default should be between -3 and +7 dBmv, however i am fully aware that each CMT has its own set limits and someone with +9dBmv can have no issues at all.. His being -6dBmv and being outside optimal and you not knowing his own CMT actual limits then you are unable to say he is within acceptable range.
