Free speed upgrade?

Hi everyone!

I'm on the 50MB package in area 30. I remember talk about free speed upgrades to 70MB from 50MB. Did that materialise in the end? I thought VM would get rid of 50MB and move everyone up, but 50MB is still being sold to new customers.

What happened?

Thanks very much!

Re: Free speed upgrade?

New customers get 50/100/200 as options.

Older customers eligible for the free upgrade had 70/150/200 as the upgrade options.

If you log in to your MyVirginMedia you should see if your speed boost is ready.

Alternatively you can pop your postcode in:

https://keepup.virginmedia.com/speedupgrade

To see when it's due.

Re: Free speed upgrade?

Thank you very much for the quick response Shafreya. Guess I should be on 70MB since I've been with Virgin for about 15 years. Well, was NTL before, and Diamond Cable even before that!

That website you linked me to says "Hold on tight. Your speed boost is ready now! Register or sign in to My Virgin Media to order your upgrade". When I sign in, I don't see a link. Either I'm missing something or it's because I've got more than one Virgin account. And clicking MY PROFILE then MANAGE ACCOUNTS only leads to an error.

Will have to call Virgin tomorrow about it.

Thank you again!

Re: Free speed upgrade?

The caveat for the speed upgrade is you are not allowed to of changed your package (not just broadband) or got any discounts since last October. Doing anyone of them makes you ineligible.

If your speed boost is ready (sometimes it's a false positive at the end of the month with the tracker) then when you call up tomorrow they should be able to activate your boost to 70Mbs. If they offer to boost you to anything else, be warned that it will enter you in a new contract if you accept.

Re: Free speed upgrade?

Free upgrade doesn't do anything. I wanted to stay with the cheapest package that costs less than £30 but in time the bill grew all the way to this figure and who needs all these services provided by virgin media that costs money?Seriously, where is the upgrade on the upload speed. I mean exact speeds in real time.

Re: Free speed upgrade?

If you want upload speed, move to a technology designed for it (BT/sky etc) as VMs technology was designed for TV. Hence why thE upload speed currently has to be lower.

alternatively you can wait for DOCSIS 3.1 which should do A LOT to balance things out.

Free speed upgrades do help, the download speed is nice for some people, the extra upload the free boosts give too is also nice for some people.
