Does anyone get the speed they are paying for ?

Hi all

I have been paying for 200mb since it was available but the most i have ever gotten is about 110mb (for maybe a few minutes). I have complained to virgin numerous times about this and have swapped router, been messed about by people over the phone. On average I get between 30mb-90mb, so what am I paying for? Just wondered if anyone actually gets close to their stated broadband speed?

Thanks

Yep, the vast majority of customers do.

How are you testing? Wired or wirelessly?

Yes, I do most of the time but noticeably reduced in the evenings and at weekends.  I'm only on the 70mbps service, recently and without any announcement upgraded by VM to 80mbps and I usually get 76mbps during the day.  I'm surprised I can get such speeds considering how far away I am from the street cabinet.

distance from cabinet doesn't effect speed on cable. you are thinking of DSL and BT network

Re: Does anyone get the speed they are paying for ?

@Dave_cq

It's still the 70Mbs service, they just have to over provision the packages so the overheads don't drop you under 70Mbs, they aim for 10%-15% over as far as I'm aware. They recently upped it a bit more as some customers were getting slightly under their package size with no problems in the area.

As to cabinet distance, doesn't make a difference on VMs network, which is different to BTs etc where it does make a difference.

Re: Does anyone get the speed they are paying for ?

I think firstly you need to find out for definite why you are not getting to the speeds you think you should be getting.

it could be that you are testing on a wireless connection?

maybe your power levels are out of the the sweet spot needed?

Whats popular round here at the minute is peak time overloaded network syndrome and if you have this you will never get the speeds you want.

fingers crossed its one of the first two but i think for any of the mods to help you need to give them the info from the modem etc..

.

Re: Does anyone get the speed they are paying for ?

I test on wired connection, everything is wired except phones. They replaced my modem and dont see any problems with that and no faults in the area. I test connection at peak and non peak times still around 20-90mbps.
