Broadband speed on Virgin SuperFibre50

I have SuperFibre 50 and do not experience many problems (I don't download and rarely stream, but when I do it seems OK).

But prompted by Watchdog I have tested my connection speed, and it came out thus:

Download 7.4 Mbps
Upload 2.9 Mbps
Latency 11 ms

I have tested it at different times and different days, and it always comes out more or less the same, sometimes higher, sometimes lower.

Now! Given that before I did this, I had no problem with the service, should I be getting more, or is this about right, for SuperFibre50?

Regards

Serv

Re: Broadband speed on Virgin SuperFibre50

Gosh a visit from Servalan that usually means trouble.... Smiley Indifferent

Ill cut you a deal. Leave us Orac and we'll try and help.

The answer is "it depends"  You SHOULD get 50 or thereabouts if you speed test using a PC or Laptop , connected with CAT5E or better direct to your HUB.

How are you testing ATM?

Re: Broadband speed on Virgin SuperFibre50

Thanks for the reply.

Through the hub, connected by cable to the PC.

Re: Broadband speed on Virgin SuperFibre50

Okay check the cable is CAT5E or better spec- it will be screenprinted on it.

Next, go to your Superhub Log in screen

Do NOT log in.

Little button top right.....

Can you post Upstream, Downstream and Network logs.

Screen caps are nice, C&P will do- Don't stress about formatting if you C&P. Someone will get a look and see if there's anything obvious amiss.

Re: Broadband speed on Virgin SuperFibre50

The cable is CAT 5... not 5E.

Re: Broadband speed on Virgin SuperFibre50

That will limit your speeds on your home network  but it shouldn't make much difference on 50Mbps tier to your speed.

Post the power levels as above and well get a look and see if there's anything badly wrong.

Re: Broadband speed on Virgin SuperFibre50

Your upstream is running highish but but still in spec. Does your connection drop out at times?

Re: Broadband speed on Virgin SuperFibre50

Very rarely. As I said, before I did this test, I was experiencing minimal problems with Slave. And, indeed, since doing this test. It's only the low figures that bothered me.

Thanks, Watchdog, for making me worry about nothing, then?

Re: Broadband speed on Virgin SuperFibre50

If you want to do a further check-

Set up a BQM

HERE

Run it for say 24 hrs, and post the result.

Dont forget youll need to make sure your super hub is configured to reply to ICMP echo requests...

But if your connection is fine from your POV, theres little to worry about. Do you use online streaming services? Netflix? YouTube? Do they work okay?
