Broadband dropping all the time

I am so fed up with my Virgin Broadband. I play online bridge and the connection is always dropping and by the time I have re-established it I have lost my online seat. I have had the online technical man check my equipment ( just a laptop with just me using it). They tried to say there were programmes running in the background blocking it and I spent money at the local computer shop checking this out. There is nothing wrong with it. I have McAfee virus checker that is all. I think there are too many on the one line and Virgin need a booster - am I right? I used to have Sky and never had problems like this.

Re: Broadband dropping all the time

1stly need to identify if its a Wifi or internet issue.

Are you connected Via wifi or ethernet cable, if WiFi do you still have these problems when connected via ethernet.

As a quick aside, on your laptop go to your wifi adaptor settings and make sure that the option to allow power saving to switch off wifi is not enabled (sorry don't have wifi so can't remember exactly how to get to it).

Re: Broadband dropping all the time

Hey there sibyll15,

Thanks for joining the community, great to see you Smiley Happy

Sorry to hear about the problems you're having with your connection. As stevedh2 has said above, we need to find out if you're using a wireless or a hard-wired connection? If you're using the wireless, often changing the channel can help.

Please get back to us so we can continue to help.

Take care.

Re: Broadband dropping all the time

Hi sibyll15,

Thanks for letting us know about your issues with your broadband connection dropping all the time, I apologise for any inconvenience caused.

I have tested things from here and I can see that all of your power levels are within the preferred ranges and there's no errors or time outs inside the Hubs logs.

Are you still having these issues? If so, please respond to me here with a recent copy of your Hubs logs. You can find these by opening your internet browser and typing 192.168.0.1 into the address bar, before logging in it will say 'Router Status' in the top right hand corner, click there and all the information needed is inside.

Also, when the connection drops what does your Hubs light sequence indicate?

Take care,

Thanks,

Adam.

Re: Broadband dropping all the time

Thanks for taking the time with me and in the last few days it has not been as bad - perhaps it knows you are 'on its case' lol. Anyway much to my amazement as I am the most untechy person on the planet, I have found the hubs log so here it is:

Distance massively effects Wifi.

Re: Broadband dropping all the time

The box is not far away from my laptop and it makes no difference if I sit right next to it. I think what is wrong is that there are too many people on the same cable.

Re: Broadband dropping all the time

#facepalm

The further away from the router you are the lower the wireless signal strength gets... the lower the strength the lower the speed and the more it can be affected by other devices (E.g Coreless home telephones) this in turn can cause random cuts of internet along with other symtoms/problems all leading back to.. Your too far away from the router... You said in you post you too far away for a cable, are you possibly too far away for wireless also? could be an easy fix right there.. move router closer or move closer to the router, wireless range extenders are an option and also homeplugs.

And none of that i believe and i think i should add...
