AREA 20 - Regular latency spikes

I've noticed our broadband getting worse and worse over the last few months.  Trigged by frequent multi second drop outs of VOIP calls as well as my son's complaints about lag in games I started doing some monitoring using the thinkbroadband quality monitor.

There seems to be some major problems on the Virgin Media network - with average latency periodically (every 4 hours or so) jumping up to above the 100mS level, plus some extended periods of this sort of average latency.   Similarly when I ping the VirginMedia routers (only a few hops away) I see latency sometimes of several seconds !

Is this common ?   I haven't seen anything similar on other threads.
