TiVo/V+ Boxes and Security

What steps have you taken to prevent your "Smart" boxes from being infected with the "Mirai" malware infection, and to clean those already infected?

Thank you.

I do not work for VM. The advice I give is based on my best understanding of VM policy and practice. You rely on it at your own risk.

Re: TiVo/V+ Boxes & Security

Forgive me, gentemen (and ladies if present) but (a) none of you have identified yourselves as working for Virgin Media, and (b) since when did a closed network prevent anyone who is INSIDE that network from introducing malware? (whether intentionally or otherwise).

I'll hold out for a member of the VM team to respond.

That will be a long wait. this is a community forum. Virgin Media's IT specialists probably don't read it and for sure don't ever post here.

IN the meantime, why don't you go read up on how the Mirai malware actually works *, then peddle  your silly conspiracy theories elsewhere.

lets entertain for a moment the daft idea that it's gets planted onto a Tivo, what's it then going to do - being completely cut off from the outside world - infect your car or your cat ???

* Mirai then identifies vulnerable devices using a table of common factory default usernames and passwords, and logs into them ..

.... Once infected, the device will connect to a command and control server which indicates the target of an attack.

 FYI

1. TIvo has no log in , no passwords, Zero ability to communicate to a bot control centre.

2. VM will not respond here - you are stuck with arguing with us - or going away.

3. are you next going to tell us that the REALreason our Tivos have gone sluggish is because they are busy helping zombify the internet ?

4. but feel free to unplug yours - one small sacrifice for mankindSmiley Happy

Re: TiVo/V+ Boxes & Security

I would hardly call asking a question "peddling a silly conspiracy theory".
