OpenVPN + Inactivity Timeout + Connection Dropouts

Hi

I am experiencing constant connection drops using OpenVPN both on Windows 7 x64 and Android Lollipop. The dropouts occurs within hours or sometimes minutes after maintaining a stable connection. My VPN provider carried out some performance tests and they suspect the problem could be line instability with my broadband connection.

Can the VM community help me troubleshoot this?

Thank you

Re: OpenVPN + Inactivity Timeout + Connection Dropouts

Just to add the service is based on OpenVPN and is tunnelled by default in UDP.

Any help with would be appreciated.

Re: OpenVPN + Inactivity Timeout + Connection Dropouts

After looking around looks like I am not the only VM customer having problems with OpenVPN.

It would be helpful if the Support Team or anyone could assist me with this, thank you.

What is with the multiple Map Request Retry Timeout entries and a TOD error?

Re: OpenVPN + Inactivity Timeout + Connection Dropouts

Hi Nanoverb,

I'd like to run a few follow up checks on your connection from this end in the first instance, however as your last post wasn't from your Virgin connection I've been unable to locate your account details.

If you could drop us a quick update from home, we'll be able locate your details and run a few diagnostic checks.

Many thanks

Re: OpenVPN + Inactivity Timeout + Connection Dropouts (POOR SERVICE FROM VM)

I am still experiencing timeouts and TOD Errors. I had an outage last week as well. I haven't heard back from the VM Team regarding the diagnostic checks. I started this topic befrore Xmas and we are in February and I have not had any help from the community.

The standards here have slipped. What's going on!?

Re: OpenVPN + Inactivity Timeout + Connection Dropouts (POOR SERVICE FROM VM)

Hi Nanoverb,

I've tested your connection thoroughly but can find nothing to account for the timeouts shown in your previous posts. Your Hub is currently reporting only a single timeout for the past 8 days. I therefore suspect that you are no longer affected by the disconnections you originally reported

However if you are would you please let us know:

  • How often these disconnects are occurring.
  • Are the disconnects affecting anything other than your VPN connection?
  • How often this is happening (e.g. every few mins, every hour, 4 times per day etc).
  • Do you have PPTP passthrough selected in your Hub settings? (Advanced Settings > Security > Firewall PPTP Pass-Through > Apply)

I'll look out for your reply in case further support is required Smiley Happy

Re: OpenVPN + Inactivity Timeout + Connection Dropouts (POOR SERVICE FROM VM)

Hi Jen,

Thanks for your response. As far I am aware I have not had a single downtime or disconnection other than my VPN disconnecting after a few hour or less.

I've had PPTP passthrough selected and it did nothing to improve the stability of the VPN timeouts disconnects that I experience every once in a while.

I am concerned about the TOD errors which I never seen before that are cropping up in log all the time. Could you explain what they are?

Thank you.

Hey Nanoverb,

Thanks for getting back to us Smiley Happy

The TOD alerts you're seeing are nothing to worry about, they're just reports relating to the time of day, they're not a cause for concern.

Thanks again for keeping in touch,

Take care.
