Have 'a broken cable' needs two men to lift the cable .broke on 8th Dec the earliest they can get someone there after an hour on the phone is Jan 5th . Is this normal ?

Over the Xmas/New Year period, yes it is. You are also unlikely to get a better servcie from any of VM's competitors.
