hub setup

have upgraded to 60 meg and the engineer is coming on 25th but he is fitting a hub,now i have a brand new router which i do not want to discard so can i change the hub to a modem only? i have been told by a friend i can(he used to work for vm) but if the answer is yes,how do i go about it?? would like to get it staight before he fits it!!
