Ping

Hi,

I was unsure as to where this topic should go so feel free to move it if it is in the wrong section.

I am currently having problems with my ping. I have an upto 10mBytes internet and have been receiving normal levels of download and upload speeds.

However my ping has been extremely high recently. It has been more noticable at what would be peak times. Before I would get between 30-60ms but over the past few nights I have about 400-1150ms. This has caused havoc which my gaming on the ps3 and made it unusable.

I was wondering what there is I could do to try and lower this. When I reset my router/modem it temporarily fixes the problem but not for very long. Is it likely to be an problem at VM's side or my own?

Thanks for any feedback.

Re: Ping

(Taken From Mark_Wilkin Post)
Inside the modem are various web pages that contain useful information about your connection. When reporting a connection fault it may be useful to include some of the information found within these pages. To view them open up your web browser and type http://192.168.100.1 into the address bar and press Enter.

The main information the Support team are interested in are the Downstream Power Level/Levels, Upstream Power Level and Downstream SNR (called RxMER on some modems). Depending on the model of modem you have this information will either be located in the ‘Signal’ page or the ‘Downstream’ and ‘Upstream’ pages.
Also please include the full event log from inside your modem.

Please note some modems will require you to log in before you can view these pages. The login details for both the username and password is root.

If using Netgear VMDG280
Visit http://192.168.0.1 enter password when prompted (This can be found on a sticker on your VMDG280)
Click on the Connection and paste the information there.

Hi,

Not sure if this is relevant as my ping is currently low but if this information is not determined by my current values then here it is:

Re: Ping

your downstream power is on the low side. it might be this dropping when you get bad pings. Next time you get high pings check it again and see if its any different.

VM will also get to this post after a few days and check from there end as they will have more tools and information then we can see

Re: Ping

Hi KyleM,

I have sent you a PM regarding this.

Once the engineer has adjusted the power levels, you will need to monitor your connection to see if the ping times have reduced.

If not, let us know and we'll see what else we can do.

Kind Regards,

Jen_A
