I too have had problems for the last few days, I'm only getting 0.5 upload speeds on a speed test, I can't get any you tube videos to work and I can't get through to Virgin Media to ask why.

You seem to be getting the same problem as everyone else - slowdowns with downloads etc - look at the problems everyone is having trying to download from rapidshare, megaupload etc. It is a waste of time phoning tech support - they will give you no solutions and take your money.
I suppose the best solution that would work and can be given in two words - LEAVE VIRGIN
Virginmedia the retro service provider, join us and experience broadband at dial-up speeds

I have also gone down to less than 1mbit. I'm fairly sure this is supposed to be a 10mbit connection.
I also cannot play World of Warcraft for **bleep**, there's a whole other storm in a teacup about that one.

I've got the same on a 10Mb cable connection, it works at less than 1Mb (checked on Speedtest) in the evenings.
Complete waste of time being with VM, I understand that hardware in the road is shared and there is only so much capacity in the system - but 90% reduced service? How about I reduce my bill payment by 90% and see if the call centre notices that??

I have never experienced such shoddy service as I have since joining VM. Latency through the roof even at 10am. Trying to play games online after 3.30pm til midnight is a waste of time and connection speeds equal to dial up. I am sick of calling VMs so called Tech support. I have emailed them results of trace route tests which clearly show that the problem is with VM and all I get back is call Tech Support for assistance... yeah right I know this is so VM can continue to fill it's coffers whilst I pay for a totally rubbish service. Time to call in Trading Standards and Oftel

Yep - I'm having exactly the same problem.
Averaging 1.1mps on a 10mps line..... at any time of the day.
I've tried to call their 'support line' 5 times over the last week. Each time, I'm told they are having techinical problems!
Suppose it's time to move on.... any suggestions about who to go with?

Go with BeThere, a small outfit that only do broadband - no phone deals, no TV, just broadband. I was getting about 18megs steady service on a pretty bad BT phone line and they are not expensive.
They're Customer and Tech Service is great - in fact sometimes I had trouble getting them off the phone...
I've been with quite a few including dreadful BT and Sky and I'd go back to Bethere tomorrow...

I'm on the 20meg package at the moment and quite frankly it's embarrassing. For weeks I have been lagging like crazy on the xbox and thinking it's the router or microsoft or whatever. Then I do some tests and I'm getting 1.5 download speeds and pings after 7 of 200ms and sometimes more.
I think I'm best off just leaving because I don't know how many times I've phoned in the past when I'm not getting anywhere near the full speed, it goes up to 18 for about a week then I'm back down to 6 or 7.

I know this old thread but I've noticed this problem in a lot of places.
Most of my family are connected on the internet through the Virgin 10mb package.
In 1995 Telewest rolled out cable internet in our area of the South west and it was great!
At this time Telewest were supplying the Motorola Surfboard SB4100 with their packages, bearing in mind these started at 1mb and 2mb packages.
The problem that Virgin now have is that the old modems are still being used, they are very very old..
Virgin did send out a more modern replacement for my grand-parents and its fast again.
My parents on the other hand are having problems, CS keep telling them to turn it all off for 10 minutes and Virgin will send a packet down the line to test everything is ok.
It always turns out ok... The CS doesnt seem to understand that theres absolutely nothing wrong with the line..
The problem is that the Motorola modem is 14 years old, the engineers logs show that the SW update is failing (software update).
The SW update is no longer compatable with the Motorolla surfboard platform or they are so old the chips inside are starting to go faulty.
I have been monitoring my parents internet connection weekly for 2 months, they have the 10mb package... In this time we hit the 10mb speed for about 3 days, the current download speed for this connection is less that 0.5mb.
What do Virgin say, nothing because they may have upgraded THEIR systems for faster speed but they havn't upgraded the customer side...
I think Virgin need to start addressing the issues with the old modems or as noticed the out of date hardware people still have will come back to bite them
£25 a month for 10mb unlimited...
or £10 a month for 20mb unlimited with sky.
Its a no brainer really which is why my parents and many of my customers are considering moving back to Sky.
