Important changes take place today [1st July 2015] to the way 08, 09 & 118 numbers are charged. It’s all part of UK Calling.

Every day, people use service numbers to make phone calls to companies and organisations, contact directory enquiries or even to vote in TV shows.

Ofcom recognise that the cost of calling these numbers – which start 08, 09 or 118 – is often difficult to find out.

Today this changes, under a new system which will make the cost of calling service numbers clear for everyone.

It's called UK Calling, and it's the biggest change to telephone calls in over a decade.

  • All 080 and 116 numbers will continue to be free from landlines
  • 084, 087 and 09 numbers will be known as Non Geographic Numbers (not service numbers) to align with the rest of the industry
  • 118 will be referred to as Directory Enquiries

Check out Ofcom's quick video, which explains what's happening really rather simply.
