cannot get 5ghz wifi on my super hub 3.0

I am a recent member to Virgin Media and have tried to set up 2.4ghz and 5ghz wireless networks but it does not work! My laptop is capable of using 5ghz. I have set up both networks with the same name plus "-2" for the 2ghz and "-5" for the 5ghz, however when I view available networks I can only see the -2 network. Same result if I use a WiFi Analyzer. One of the reasons for wanting to do this is my Amazon Firestick will use a 5ghz wifi so I may get less buffering.

Without meaning to sound silly, are you sure your laptop is capable ?

My laptop is less than a year old, but is not capable - I had to buy a small dongle which allowed full speeds

Yes, I've checked. It is 802.11a.

According to IEEE "The 802.11a specification uses an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing encoding scheme rather than FHSS or DSSSand provides up to 54 Mbps in the 5GHz band."

Re: cannot get 5ghz wifi on my super hub 3.0

I have researched this further and you are correct. My wifi adaptor, Qualcomm Atheros AR9485WB-EG Wireless Network Adapter, has no option to enable 5g. The card card supports up to wireless n, but only on a 2.4 GHz band and won't be able to connect to a 5 GHz band. Seemingly there's some confusion in the industry where there are several versions of Wireless N - some are 2.4, some are 5, some are both, unfortunately my hardware can only use 2.4Ghz.
On the bright side I have found the Amzon Firestick is using the 5ghz network so my mission was a success after all!

Re: cannot get 5ghz wifi on my super hub 3.0

Its kinda annoying that new equipment does not always come with the latest drivers such as 5GHz, but at least its ended well

N was a bit of a disaster, there was Pre-N then Draft N etc.

Basically Beta testing the hardware you paid for lol.

11a mentioned above is not 5, it has to be 11ac, they are very different.

Wrong.

11bgn is 2.5Ghz.
11abgn is 2.5Ghz and 5Ghz (5Ghz was used well before 11ac).

The card mentioned above is a 11bgn only.
