I am a recent member to Virgin Media and have tried to set up 2.4ghz and 5ghz wireless networks but it does not work! My laptop is capable of using 5ghz. I have set up both networks with the same name plus "-2" for the 2ghz and "-5" for the 5ghz, however when I view available networks I can only see the -2 network. Same result if I use a WiFi Analyzer. One of the reasons for wanting to do this is my Amazon Firestick will use a 5ghz wifi so I may get less buffering.
I have researched this further and you are correct. My wifi adaptor, Qualcomm Atheros AR9485WB-EG Wireless Network Adapter, has no option to enable 5g. The card card supports up to wireless n, but only on a 2.4 GHz band and won't be able to connect to a 5 GHz band. Seemingly there's some confusion in the industry where there are several versions of Wireless N - some are 2.4, some are 5, some are both, unfortunately my hardware can only use 2.4Ghz. On the bright side I have found the Amzon Firestick is using the 5ghz network so my mission was a success after all!
